Compassion and Generosity—IMSB’s Outreach Projects
In the Pali language of ancient Buddhism, the word for compassion is karuna, and the word for generosity is dana. Compassion is at the heart of a mature spiritual practice. As we meditate, our feelings of compassion extend from a close circle of family and friends to a global outreach.
To expand our practice and engage with international and local needs, Insight Meditation South Bay’s Outreach Committee supports various charitable projects. Currently our projects include:
- The Prajna Vihar School in Bodh Gaya, India (in partnership with One World Children’s Fund)
- A scholarship fund for participants who need financial support to attend our retreats
- Volunteering at soup kitchens, aid for needy children, and various other charitable efforts in the Bay Area.
In addition, we periodically support other charitable projects that members bring to our attention and are compatible with our mission.
Outreach Committee
The Outreach Committee was formed to connect donors with the projects they support. Outreach committee members update and inform donors about the developments of the Prajna Vihar School and other projects through website postings. The committee also hosts periodic appreciation events in the South Bay area. In the past, we have hosted presentations by best selling authors and Buddhist teachers such as Martine Batchelor, Bhikkhu Bodhi, Lama Surya Das and Annie Nugent. The committee is also tasked with notifying current and future donors of our annual donation period, which occurs every spring; however, you can donate at any time.
You may donate by credit card through IMSB’s Network for Good account, or send a check to IMSB Outreach Fund, PO Box 490, Menlo Park, California, 94026. Please designate the name of the project or fund to ensure that your donation goes to the project or fund of your choice.
